The Indian automotive arena
In India there is one vehicle per hundred people, compared with 82 in China. It is expected that the Indian automobile industry will achieve mass motorisation status by 2014.
The liberalisation policy and tax concessions offered by the Indian government in recent years have had a remarkable impact on the automobile industry, which is currently growing at a pace of around 18% per annum. India has become a hot destination for global auto players. As the transport system grows rapidly so too does the automotive industry behind it, providing significant support to the India's booming economy.
Today, the local automotive industry is fully capable of producing various kinds of vehicles and can be divided into three broad categories: cars, two-wheelers and heavy vehicles.
- Motorcycles contribute 80% of the segment size
- Tata Motors dominates with a 60% share of the Indian commercial vehicle market
- Two thirds of auto component production is consumed directly by OEMs
- India is the largest three-wheeler market in the world
- India is the largest two-wheeler manufacturer in the world
- India is the second largest tractor manufacturer in the world
- India is the fifth largest commercial vehicle manufacturer in the world
- The premier global motorcycle manufacturer is based in India.
On the cost front, OEMs are eyeing India in a big way as somewhere to source products and components at significantly lower costs than their own domestic markets.
The passenger car and motorcycle segment in India is growing by between 8-9%. The two-wheeler segment will clock a 11.5% increase by the end of 2008. Commercial vehicles are set to grow by 5.2%.
Passenger vehicle exports have increased fivefold and two-wheeler exports have doubled. Exports of auto components have grown by 25%. The cost of component manufacture is between 30-40% less than in the West.
